The Day of Lavos
by SimBen

Hi. This is a fanfic that crosses the stories of the Metroid series and Chrono Trigger. Now you know the usual crap, the characters don't belong to me, this isn't the official story, you can't sell this, etc. Thank you, I hope you get a pleasant reading.

Prologue

The Day The World Ceased To Live

It was a clear and sunny day on July 14th, 1999 A.D. The birds were flying as usual, and the Arris Dome stood where it was built some years before. The Arris Dome was a military facility, but that use was just in case they needed it, since the last war was the Mystics' War, in 600 A.D. The building served mainly as a meteorological station, and it was also the centre of the Extra-Terrestrial investigation committee, whose job, for now, was only to stay tuned to the skies to capt any potential Alien intelligence. At 1:04 PM that day, the seismometers of Arris Dome started to pick up an abnormal seismic activity that seemed to be spreading to the entire planet. The operators woke up the Supervisor and informed him of the situation.

-Sir! The center of the quake seems to be Death Peak!

-What is the force of the quake?

-Hmm, about two on the Richter Scale, but it's slowly creeping higher.

-That's strange, Death Peak isn't on a seismic area...

-Sir! The force is starting to grow very fast! 3... 4... 5... It looks like it's not gonna get any higher.

At that moment, the ground of Arris Dome started to shake. The amazed supervisor looked at the video display in front of him. As he saw what looked like a big crater opening near the foot of Death Peak, his amazement changed into horror.

-Prepare the military arsenal!

-But sir, this isn't a war...

-I said do it now!

-But our soldiers aren't trained.

Then the supervisor realised the error mankind did since 600 A.D.: they had completely stopped training soldiers since world peace had been declared.

-You're right, said the supervisor. I sure hope they've made it...

-Who? asked the operator.

-The Heroes Of Time...

Indeed, they had made it. Out of three blue portals came out seven people, wearing really strange costumes. The first one was a young man with an impossible haircut. The second was a beautiful woman with a ponytail and an Arabic Princess-like suit. The third one was a girl with glasses and a weird head gear. The 4th was a frog, dressed in a knight's uniform, wearing a long and heavy-looking sword. The 5th one was a R-Series, a new breed of artificial intelligence which was recently discovered. The 6th one was a, hmm, well, a chick wearing a bikini, and the last one was a dark wizard holding a scythe. Their respective names were Crono, Marle, Lucca, Frog, Robo, Ayla and Magus.

The group saw a big spiky thing come out of the crater.

-Lavos... said Magus as the seven drew their weapons.

They didn't even make it past the shell. As Lavos fired a spike at Marle, Crono shouted NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and got between the love of his life and the spike. He died immediately, his heart was hit. Marle fell on her knees and started to cry on her lover. That's when the merciless Lavos killed her. Frog's hatred got the top over his brain: It was the second time he lost a friend (he didn't know Marle much). And his reflex was to jump on Magus, saying "I will do what I should hath done ten years ago!" and Magus was so surprised, he couldn't dodge the Masamune's strike. As the two halves of Magus fell on the ground, Frog realised what he just did and suicided himself. Ayla's primitive methods were no match for the Alien, and Lavos bit her right arm off. She died hours later of an external hemorrhage. Lucca shot like crazy at Lavos, until she ran out of bullets. She was an easy target for Lavos' wrath, and she fell like a leaf. Robo, full of sadness and hatred, tried his Uzzi Punch. Lavos electrified him as soon as Robo's arm touched him.

-NO!!! said the supervisor.

-The quake's force is now at ten! No building can survive that!

-...

-Porre, Choras, Medina... Everything's getting destroyed!

-... Escape! Go hide in the basement!

-Sir, I won't leave you!

-Do you want to die? I need to be alone!

-Y,Yes sir.

The operator escaped the room, which was starting to rip apart. The supervisor knew what was happening.

-Lavos...

Chunks of rocks started to fall in the control room, as just about everything in the world was destroyed. Lavos flew to the top of Death Peak, then started to reproduce. When three of Lavos' Spawns were born, Lavos buried himself to suck what was left of the energy of the planet. Of course, when the planet would have no energy left, Lavos would die, but his Spawns would escape, and infect three other planets, and this would go on and on, until all the life in the universe is exterminated. There was a slight chance that Lavos could die before he was done eating everything...

But...
     The Future Refused
          To Change...

Chapter 1: First Contact

1500 years had passed since the Day Of Lavos. Thankfully, what was left of mankind succeeded in rebuilding the world. But the population knew that if they didn't escape from Earth fast, their energy would be sucked by Lavos, who was still buried in the core. The Lavos Spawns, who were now fully grown, had left the planet a week before. Now there was another menace: the humans had to warn the other life forms in the universe of Lavos. Also, maybe their technology could help them to kill Lavos and save Earth. So on November 12th, 1500 A.L. (After Lavos), the first interstellar ship, the Hermes, was launched from where the Arris Dome used to stand. After that, many similar ships were built in chain assembly for free (no one asked for money since it was for the good of the whole universe). No matter how many planets were explored, an intelligent life-form wasn't found until 2000 A.L. That year, on SR-388, the 512388th planet explored, a really advanced race was found: the Chozo. The Chozo had amazing technology. They had suits which could adapt to about any kind of weapon, and they agreed to make some modeled after human bodies. Actually, there was quite a big interstellar union in the whole galaxy, in which the Chozo were members. When the humans asked to join them, they accepted without hesitation. The Chozo said that they were fighting against the Space Pirates. It was of little concern to the humans, who warned the Great Council about Lavos, and asked them a planet with humanly livable conditions and technology to move the whole humanity to the planet. Actually, there were three Earth-like planets near SR-388, which the humans named Belthasar, Gaspar and Melchior, in honor to their religion's Gods. With the Federation's high technology, the colonization of the planets was done within a few months. It was just in time, because through the windows of the Transports, the colonists could watch in horror their planet being sucked from the inside, then the frozen, rock-like body of Lavos being attracted by the Sun to finally crash into it. At last, Lavos was dead, but not in the way the Heroes Of Time expected it to die.

It was now 2045 A.L. and the humans were starting to get involved in the fight against the Space Pirates. Most humans were good at aiming and firing, so it was decided that a Space Police would be founded, composed primarily of humans. Also, some humans were attracted to bounty hunting. It was because of what the Aliens called the "human sense", or the irresistible attraction to travel and adventure. The Bounty Hunters were given Chozo suits to help them in their life.

2075 A.L. On Gaspar, Hans and Ellen Aran gave birth to a beautiful little girl. When she was born, it struck Ellen like a thunderbolt:

-Samus.

-What? asked Hans.

-Samus. It's her name.

-Samus, heh? Well, that's a pretty good name. All right, Samus, welcome to the Life!

So a Legend was born... Who would have guessed Samus would one day save the universe? I'm sure you wouldn't. Anyway, back to the story...

During her early childhood, Samus quickly became friends with her neighbour, Armstrong Houston. Both families lived normal, peaceful lives, as Samus was starting to get attracted to Armstrong. One day in 2095 A.L., when Samus was 20, Armstrong gave a rendezvous to Samus. When she got there, it seemed like Armstrong had something really important to tell her.

-Uh, hi Sam.

-Hi Arm.

-You know Sam, ever since I met you, I’ve wanted to ask you this.

Armstrong then cleared his throat to give himself some courage.

-Samus Aran, will you…

Armstrong couldn’t finish his sentence, because the city’s alarm started to ring. It was a Space Pirates attack! Both rushed back to their homes, only to find their parents dead, and they met a big lizard and a winged alien.

-Hey look, Ridley, we’ve forgotten these, said the lizard.

-You’re right, Kraid, let me check the database…

Ridley got a mini-computer out of one of Kraid’s ventral pockets.

-What did you do to our parents? Said Armstrong.

-We did what we had to do, said Kraid.

-Ah, the girl’s name is Samus Aran, said Ridley. She must be the daughter of the people I killed.

-And the boy?

-Armstrong Houston. Hmm, Houston, isn’t that the name of the couple you slaughtered, Kraid?

-WHAT? Said Samus and Armstrong at the same time.

-Well, let’s finish the job then, said Kraid who didn’t seem to care about the almost-fiancés.

Armstrong and Samus started to run as fast as they could. They found no one alive on their path, Kraid and Ridley had killed them all. Since the two (Sam and Armstrong) knew they wouldn’t find any place to hide on the planet, they headed to the nearest spaceport. There, they found a big, yellow ship with a green window. Without any hesitation, the two got in and started to lift-off (Samus had her pilot’s license) As they sped through the stars, they set the board computer to look for the nearest planet.

Chapter 3: A New Family

As the ship sped through the stars, the on-board computer was set to find the nearest planet and land on it, so that Kraid and Ridley would lose their trail. After what seemed like an eternity, the computer finally found a planet.

-SR-388 right ahead, said a voice coming from one of the speakers.

-Planet's condition? asked Samus.

One of the monitors then started to show many facts about the planet:

-Average temperature: 200 degrees Kelvin
-Gravity: 0.001 times Earth's gravity.
-No atmosphere
-Life forms:
          -Chozo
          -Various vegetal organisms
          -Various minor animal organisms
-Unknown life-form approaching planet:
          -Distance from planet: 2000 kilometres
          -Speed: 200 kilometres per hour
-Collision in: T minus 10 hours
-Chozo density on crash site: no population nearby.

-We're gonna need space suits if we want to go out of the ship, said Armstrong.

-Computer, two type-F planet exploration suits, please, said Samus.

At that moment, a wall slid open and two suits similar to the ones the Ancients used to explore the Solar System were given to the young adults.

-Computer, land, said Samus after putting on her suit.

The yellow ship landed in a Chozo field. Samus and Armstrong got out of the ship and were greeted by Chozo farmers. The humans explained that they came from Gaspar and that the whole population was killed by Space Pirates.

-Space Pirates, said one of the Chozo. They are the one that exiled us from Zebes, our native planet, and forced us to retreat up to here, on this desolate world. If only the Space Police was to stop them, we would have our revenge!

-And so would we, said Samus. Armstrong, what do you say we join the Police to kick some Pirate butt, and show Kraid and Ridley who's the boss?

-I thought you'd never ask, replied Armstrong.

-Let's go, the recruiting center is on Belthasar, said Samus.

-Wait! said the Chozo. If you want to confront the Space Pirates, you're gonna need more than the lousy gun they give you over there! Here, take these suits, they're made just for your anatomy.

The Chozo showed to Samus and Armstrong two fantastic Chozo Bounty-Hunter suits. The two gratefully grabbed them and went back to the ship carrying them. Once on board, both tried it on.

-Wow, said Samus. It's amazing how I feel so speedy and light while in such a heavy costume!

-The suit must send some sort of stimulation to the muscular system, said Armstrong.

-Sorry to interrupt you, but do you authorize the deployment of investigation probe drones? said the computer. I'm programmed to identify and do some research on any new life form we may discover, and the thing approaching the planet may prove to be most interesting.

-Sure, deploy them, said Armstrong.

The ship deployed three probe drones, lifted off and set course for Belthasar. When they were almost there, the computer started to sound amazed.

-Ecosystem unbalance on SR-388! Ecosystem unbalance on SR-388! Probe reports: Vegetation... almost eliminated. Minor life forms... serious mutations. Unknown life form... landed. Chozo... extinct.

-What? That's impossible! said Samus. Just a few hours ago they were tens of thousands!

-Video report of the event.

The screens showed garbled images, but the clear image of what seemed like a meteor falling on the planet's surface shone. And a little while after, a horrible shriek was heard. A shriek that would horrify even the bravest living thing. A shriek that sounded like the Devil himself bursting out of hell. A shriek that belonged to...

-Lavos! cried Samus.

Of course, that shriek was taught to every children in the human worlds. They were told to flee to the closest spaceport if they ever heard it. It was broadcasted once a week to every first-graders to be sure they wouldn't forget it. Indeed, no one had forgotten it.

-But that's impossible! said Armstrong. Lavos was just a fairy tale to scare the little children!

-Lavos... the thing that destroyed the planet of the Ancients... the one the old people called Earth when they told for the 97th time their story... This must be one of Lavos' Spawns...

-I can't believe this story is still haunting the humanity...

-Belthasar in sight, said the computer.

The two continued crying silently for a while before they actually realised what the computer just said.

-Oh, O-Okay, sobbed Samus. P-Prepare to land...

The two continued sobbing in each other's arms while the ship was slowly descending to the planet's surface...

Chapter 4: Samus' First Mission

Despite Houston's warning, Samus entered the ship and left for Zebes. As she approached the planet's orbit, she saw that a battle was going on. On one side was the Space Police's ships, and on the other, the Space Pirates. The Police had much more firepower , so Samus figured she'd better stay out of it. After all, the very last Chozo (who weren't on SR-388 when the Lavos came) had just arrived on a super-powerful Chozo Cruiser. Samus decided that she should slip past the battle while it was going on. As she approached planet Zebes, the ship's computer started picking up a strange interference. It sounded like a distant shriek... Samus stopped her ship and turned it towards the interference's source. She could see a small, red dot approaching. Samus pulled the ship away from the planet to get a better view. The red dot was becoming bigger and bigger every second... until it finally crashed into the Chozo Cruiser. The Chozo race was now truly extinct in the silence of space. But the thing didn't stop there, in fact, it didn't even slow down. As the Police saw what was happening, the order of retreat was immediately given. Samus was so angry at what was now a giant fireball that she didn't follow the order. As the fireball finished passing through the cruiser, Samus could see that it was actually a giant ball of spikes. It crashed into the planet, thus completely destroying everything on the surface of Zebes, which was made mainly by Chozo ruins. The Cruiser was now adrift, as some frozen bird-like cadavers were floating in the silent emptiness of space. The explosion below made a shockwave which blew the atmosphere away. As Samus' ship was now surrounded by Zebes' ex-atmosphere, she could now hear what was happening outside... She heard Lavos' horrific scream... The shockwave made EMPs which rendered the ship pretty much useless, since everything which was electric in the ship didn't work anymore. Both ships started plummeting towards the burning hell below. Samus had just enough time to put on her suit before the ships touched the ground, knowing perfectly well that any Chozo suit could endure more abuse than any Human ship. Both ships crash-landed a few hundred miles away from each other. The yellow ship was turned upside-down as it raised a huge quantity of dust, which fell back immediately because there was no air anymore.
